Humanities

The humanities are scientific disciplines that study the permanence and essence of man, i.e. the experience of being human, using the analytical, critical, and speculative (thought) methods highlighted in the most empirical approaches to the natural and social sciences. The Latin word humanus means human, polite. From this word comes the word humanism, which has several meanings. Cognitive theory by humanism means emphasizing the human foundations of all cognition. The sources of this meaning are already visible at Protagoras’ (“Man is the measure of all things”). Cognition comes from man and is valid only for him. In ethics, the word humanism represents the teaching that all social relations must be based on respect for and toleration of human nature as a specific value in each individual man. Ethical humanism is a conscious affirmation of man, which excludes everything that alienates man from himself by wanting to subordinate him to superhuman forces and principles or exploits him by inhuman actions.

In the historical sense, humanitas (humanity) is a feeling of unity of the human race with the goal of the most upright and tolerable relations between people. In the cultural history of the Middle Ages, humanism is a period marked by the effort to get to know and explain classical Roman and Greek (human) literature. Examples of disciplines related to the humanities include ancient and modern languages, literature, history, philosophy, religion, visual and performing arts (including music). Additional disciplines that are sometimes included in the humanities are anthropology, the sciences of space, communication, and culture, although they are often considered the social sciences. People who practice the humanities are called humanists. However, the term also describes the philosophical standpoint of humanism, which some antihumanists deny and reject. Humanists belonged to a special social category. They were distinguished by their involvement in ancient culture and a common interest in studying. Their ideal is a versatile man (l’uomo universale) who has developed all his mental faculties and become a free spirit. Humanities are the science of classics, history, languages, law, literature, performance arts (music, acting, dance), philosophy, religion, visual arts (history of visual arts, types of media, painting), history of humanities, contemporary humanities ( digital age, justifying the existence of the humanities, citizenship, thinking about oneself and the humanities, truth, meaning and the humanities, the satisfaction of the search for knowledge and humanistic learning, romanticization, rejection of the humanities.)
